Commissioner's Office Spokesperson's Remarks on the Macao-related Content in the 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices by the US Department of State
2022/04/15

Q::The US State Department issued the 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, covering matters related to Macao SAR, What's your comment?

A:The so-called "Country Reports on Human Rights" published by the United States year after year is factually inaccurate and biased, making unfounded accusations about the human rights situation in Macao and interfering in the internal affairs of the Macao SAR and China's domestic affairs, which we firmly oppose.

Over the past 22 years since Macao returned to the motherland, the Chinese government has steadfastly and accurately implemented the principles of "one country, two systems", "Macao people ruling Macao" and a high degree of autonomy. The practice of "one country, two systems" with Macao characteristics has made remarkable achievements. The SAR residents enjoy a wide range of rights and freedoms as enshrined in the Chinese Constitution and the Macao Basic Law. Their sense of attainment, happiness and security is growing significantly. No external interference can hinder Macau's development and progress in the field of human rights.

The United States is well known for its "double standards" on human rights issues. The United States not only owns a poor human rights record, but also engages in hegemonism, unilateralism and interventionism, frequently causing humanitarian disasters around the world. The United States should recognize and reflect on its own human rights problems, and refrain from politicising human rights issues. The US should immediately stop violating the human rights around the globe, stop interfering in China's domestic affairs, including Macao's affairs.
